Volcán Popocatépetl

2 12 2007

There is a pretty big volcano not far from Mexico City, Volcán Popocatépetl. It’s Mexico’s second highest peak, and it’s very active. It blew in 1994, and has been spewing forth stuff ever since. Yesterday it went into overdrive, blasting ash two miles into the atmosphere. I remember in 2003 when I was backpacking, a thin layer of ash coming down on the city. It’s pretty evil stuff - you wouldn’t want to breathe it in. It solidifies back into rock in your lungs. Doesn’t sound healthy. The photo below is from yesterday. The News Returns

2 12 2007

English language papers aren’t easy to find in Mexico. The Mexico version of the Miami Herald was the sole option till that was discontinued a few months ago. But an old publication has been brought out of the cupboard, dusted off and put on the shelves. Not many shelves it has to be said. Sanborns carries it, maybe Wal Mart too. It’s a pretty skinny paper, and I’m not really sure how well it will do. It has a website. Sort of. Is there really a market for it? Most countries looking to sell foreign language papers simply ship in the most popular rag from that nation. You can find USA Today and Le Monde in London, for example. I bought Saturday’s edition. What it had in it was ok. Even a tiny bit on upcoming English football matches - perhaps they could give me a column! I’m sure I could add more substance to it!
